You know it’s a slow news day when the thing at the top of Memeorandum is whether or not Google is copying Yahoo or not. Well, when I was at the Google Zeitgeist opening party I met John Doerr. Don’t know who he is? Check out his Wikipedia page. He (er, his firm) funded Amazon and Google.
When we talked he said something interesting “If you’d like to start a new Microsoft, give me a call.” Note that he didn’t say “give me a call when you have the next Google.” He also didn’t say “give me a call when you have the next Yahoo.” Or the next Amazon. Or the next Apple. Or the next General Motors.
Also, I have to remember not to forget just how many businesses Microsoft is involved in and just how big an impact we’re having all over the place. As an example Buzz Bruggeman, CEO of ActiveWords, called me the other day from Mobiletrax, a cell phone industry conference (here’s his report) and he said that Microsoft SmartPhones were all over the place. I just got a look at some of the new phones that are coming out in the next few months. I thought the screen on my current Audiovox is nice, but the new ones are over the top.
Anyway, I’m so far behind on email it isn’t funny. I have 517 unanswered and they are coming in faster than I’m answering them. Sorry if I haven’t gotten back to you if you’ve sent me email. I’m going to slow down my blogging for the next week to try to catch up. The problem is that a lot of the email is about things that people want me to blog about. So, after I catch up with my email I will have a TON of things to blog.
By the way, if you guys think that Google is building a portal you’re smoking good crack. Why are they causing disruptions across the world? Cause they aren’t copying either Microsoft or Yahoo.
that is just lame, people asking to be blogged..plus let me know what the execs think

“give me a call if you have the next Microsoft”…
You WORK for Microsoft. I don’t think the meaning was any deeper than that. More name dropping, eh? John Doerr should be frog-tied and strung up like Ken Lay and Bernie Ebbers and the rest of the pumpers. Any other time, it would be monumental fraud on a grand scale, in the parallel ethical Universe that is the Valley, he’s a iconic hero. And pure con artists, like Henry Blodgett are a forgiven and reformed, a reversed cause célèbre. Yup, parallel universe, exactly that, criminal behavior, fraud, contract breaking, millions of clients money wasted, filtered away, no matter, he “apologized” for his “mistakes” on a blog.

You see why I said 2006 will be the year of the smart phone, not the HDTV 😉

Agreed on Chris writing a blog. If he could update a blog as often as he comments here, it would be well worth a read.

Chris, could you provide a link to the Salesforce.com response to MS memos?

Yeah Chris is smoking some darn good crack!! He should take a chill pill and create a blog. He throws some freaky factiods around.
Scobles, being a leader means being there first and being there fast. When googs aqquired keyhole, very few understood that googs has actually bought out a 3rd party service provider for covert ops!! Yes- google maps is tired into keyhole technology. The disruption googs is causing is because of solid buyouts w/technlogy leverage. Where as msft is developong products that support services, googs and yahoo are buying services and folding it under their folio.
Interesting spin for bubbleV2.0 eh ? Ans like the zen masters say- may we all live in interesting times. I still think that msft can make to the top once over again !!

Yes, which is why it grates so much when you and the rest of the ‘softies like to portray yourselves as the underdog.
You dominate the industry, have a monopoly on the desktop, have got away almost entirely scot free under this government for illegal antitrust business tactics, will do everything you can to maintain control of the way most people access the web and use their computers…
…and now try to portray your main competitor in the online ad space (which is revenue you had no moral entitlement to anyway) as an “evil empire” simply because they’ve had the temerity to carve out a business for themselves behind your back and earned the industry’s goodwill for giving away more value for free than Microsoft ever sold for profit.
Underdog status for Microsoft would be head-shakingly funny if it wasn’t so bitter for the true underdogs over the years who have lost out at the hand of Microsoft.

/pd, what the f are you talking about? MSFT needs to completely blow up their software design processes - and other than these “memos” they haven’t done so at all. Every day they delay they just waste more time and money doing so. They may sell a lot of Xbox 360s, but the whole Xbox project is what, like, $4 billion underwater for its lifetime? You won’t be able to get the next Grand Theft Auto on Xbox, either, so I hear…bleh.

Adam: the GTA as PS3 exclusive talk is just rumors. GTA is going to be on whatever platforms are most benefitial to Rockstar.

Man, I don’t want to sound snarky - I really do enjoy this blog most of the time. But, when you originally blogged this here the quote was “If you’d like to start a new Microsoft, give me a call.” - which has subtly different connotations in my mind to “give me a call if you have the next Microsoft.”.

Dan: you’re right. I should have gotten the quote right. The first one was accurate. This one was not.

That said, his intent was to find new businesses that are going to be wildly successful. It was clear that he says this to a lot of people and is really always looking out for the next Microsoft. Did he find it in Google? We’ll know in 10 years.

There’s something that’s been on my mind the last couple of days. And a comment here helps clarify what I believe is REALLY going on with Microsoft.
They are finally recognizing that Vista will not help out the bottom line like they had planned.
Remember the PDC ’03 Longhorn bits? Those 3 pillars? How about the time-and-time-again posts here about waiting until PDC ’05 to have oour collective socks knocked off?
In this context, I’ve been wondering why this splashy “Live” demo of a product, showing content even more underwhelming than either PDC. Or why those “leaks” of emails that were obviously meant for the public at large.
Disruption? How about distraction?
Robert, sometimes a slow news day is GOOD. Gives people time to, um, actually do something productive. I don’t know… maybe a few more slow nnews days might mean Vista might make it out the door in 12 months. Or a few more slow news days in October might have meant Live support for browsers other than IE on time.

Oh it is still my belief that the switchover from software licensing to ‘advertising’ is a path to a post-Microsoft. Vista needs to succeed, and it won’t until 2008, 2009, 2010. Upgrade cycle miss, bigtime. Worst competitor being themself. And with Gartner saying hold well off and with Software Assurance on the rocks, the answer? They get Ozzie to do a Web 2.0 stick-eye-in-Google dance?

Ozzie seems to truly believe that the advertising model may be as lucrative for the software business as the licensing model has been. “In some cases,” he writes, “it may be possible for one to obtain more revenue through the advertising model than through a traditional licensing model. Only in its earliest stages, no one yet knows the limits of what categories of hardware, software and services, in what markets, will ultimately be funded through this model. And no one yet knows how much of the world’s online advertising revenues should or will flow to large software and service providers, medium sized or tail providers, or even users themselves.” Shifting away from the licensing model represents an enormous risk for Microsoft - a risk that could, under a worst-case scenario, prove fatal.
