While it is entertaining to see IBM making a fuss on blogging I must ask myself: What for? It’ common knowledge that IBMs employees blog (Yeah, big surprise..). Blogs have inherent social rules which are arguably much stronger then any policy (If the clue train doesn’t do the trick try reading Sharing Expertise I just finished it, it’s great). Why implement a policy now. Why make so much fuss about it? I stand here and argue that IBM is afraid to miss this open communication opportunity. And it happens what always happens if someone is afraid, he starts to tell you how much he is not afraid. the result is hardly comforting. In IBMs case it resulted in, well, policies. I hope IBM will try again. A sad day for all of the great IBMler which blogs I read daily. But then these people probably won’t care anyhow, which is great!
However, this policy thing was golden for IBMs PR.
