Robert Scoble posted an e-mail from Steve Balmer, regarding Microsoft’s decision to reverse course on the gay rights issue again. In the e-mail, Balmer explains why Microsoft reversed course again, and is now once again supporting legislation to protect workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Thank you for doing the right thing. I am glad that Microsoft came out in support of gay rights for the reasons I explained before.

Just as importantly, I am impressed that a company the size of Microsoft not only listens to critical voices in the wild, but also acts on them in a timely manner. That’s just awesome. Yes, it’s too late for the bill in Washington, but there’ll be plenty of other opportunities along the same lines in the future. So when I say timely, I mean in a time frame that matters for the eventual outcome of the issue.

Can you imagine what this situation would have looked like pre-blogs? A paragraph in the pulp-blogs at best, and then forgotten. Maybe Microsoft was always this way, but Scoble is responsible for giving the company a human face. Sure, that’s messy at times, but a hundred million bucks can’t buy that kind of publicity. Good, or bad.

Who wants to take bets, on whether Scoble will be the first Vice President of Blogging?
