John Friedman’scolumn in Marketwatch compares bloggers to rats, garbage trucks, and eccentrics roaming the New York subways. Allright, I can take it. But isn’t all this manic evaluation of bloggers a symptom of overload? Self-expression on theblogging platform has exploded, and RSS has made it easy for anyone to get a full blast. If blogging is a barometer ofthe human need for self-expression, then personal blogs must be weeded out of the mix before it is evaluated onprofessional terms. And the line between professional and amateur is fuzzy in blogging, where a little AdSense revenuecan give an individual enough time to really pour out some content. Listen, all you online columnists, try to rememberwhen your medium—that static Web site with its billboard-style pages—was the new medium, viewed with encrustedsuspicion. The beauty of RSS is that it makes it easy to separate the amateurs from the pros.
