Commenting just changed for bloggers with JS-Kit Echo

by Robert Scoble on July 23, 2009

Today we’ve turned on JS-Kit’s new real-time commenting engine over on building43. We are the first site to use it, and already the comments are coming in very quickly. You can compare to Disqus because over on building43 we’re using JS-Kit and here on my blog I’m using Disqus. Come watch the video with JS-Kit’s CEO and comment live there too.

I like Disqus better. The JS-KIT comment engine seems to be quite slow, and its widget UI is too cluttered.

I use Disqus on my blog. All I want is simple, old-fashioned discussion among my readers. The social network hoopla added a lot of unnecessary junk to the discussion

This shit is slow and clunky. I'm waiting for version 2.
  • interesting comments approach & integration, thanks for the video Robert

  • Hi Robert, thanks for the great video.
Which system would you recommend based on personal experience? Since you are using Disqus on scobleizer.com and Js-kit on Building43.com.
    Thanks for sharing your insights!

  • Alex: right now I would let JS-Kit/Echo shake out a little bit. There's still a few bugs and I'm very worried about noise, so I would hang out a few weeks unless you're a site that would benefit greatly from real time. Disqus is good and works just fine for now. But I am itching to use Echo more places. Our stats for time spent on page went up by 10x today. That alone will get lots of publishers to use Echo.

    step away from the ring.
  • Hi Robert, thanks for clarifying. RE: Disqus, I am worried about their support though. Recently, I had a very poor support experience with them. Just finished an open feedback blogpost to them here: http://alexve.com/disqus-support-experience/ If you have any experience with their support, it would be great to hear from you. Thanks!

  • "paid by the minute" - there you planted a thought, Robert ;)

I still associate all the more advanced features with the possibilies of Google-Wave as the underlying infrastructure for these 'real-time'-blogging/commenting elements.

What will become more important for mortals is how are ordinary people going to learn to devide the 'noise' from the 'signals'? How are you managing the conversations if they explode in your face in real time?

Flat communities make you interact with random people equaly as with your more 'important' buddies - who might get lost in the noise...

sounds cool how can we get in on the beta?

    hi i love comments!

    i must try that!

    thanks and cheers!

Halfway through the video, I clicked on the comments link.

    The video stopped.

Too bad. It was interesting. Now I have to re-play it and find where I was.

Better to have the video continue to play when clicking on the comments link.

  • I'm getting a lot of mixed reviews on the JS-Kit Excho. Some say its just to slow right now and suggest to give it some time. I'm new to this technology so I will have to judge for myself.
  • Great interview robert. I liked your "real-world" questions on how to use the product and pointing out some potential curve balls. The product looks great...excited to try it!
  • hi again

    i tried it

sorry but i have to say

i'm not so happy with it

i still prefer the traditional way of commenting

    but then, it's just me

maybe other bloggers will appreciate the concept

    thanks anyways
  • I'm going to give it some time to get passed the initial beta "buggy" phase, but I really do like Disqus, and can't see myself changing unless there is a massive shift from the majority of sites over the Echo.
We'll go with the crowd on this one. No point alienating prospective commentors.

I have just returned from the the JS-Kit Echo. Its awesome, just a very brief comment, as I want to go back and discover more about it. If you have not checked it yet, when you get there you will know what I mean. Excellent.

I found it quite easy to use. I wonder why people having speed issues as speed for me is fine. I think this is a new chapter in social media. Excellent

"Humans prefer cockiness to expertise" http://bit.ly/ATB8E

I think this explains much of Scobleizer's popularity.
  • I'm still using Disqus now..i like it. But for my other blogs i use Js-Kit. :D
  • çok teşekkür ederim
  • Great videos, thanks!
  • The idea of "real time conversation assembly back to where the conversation first occurred" would give any self respecting investment banker or Madison Avenue executive a chubby. But reality, JS-Kit Echo service is too much on an echo chamber for me. I check out Building 43 and it is already too spammy. The assembly point is too "Porous"

I think the idea is fantastic and has huge potential. The application however of an increased leveraged conversation that has monetization capability is still too early for me. I am sticky with DISQUS on my site but keep cranking. Loved this interview.
  • Congrats on doing such a great job on your blog!
  • Perhaps I'm starting from a biased position. I use Disqus. Right now JS-KIT looks like a kludge, I'm sure with future iterations that will change. The barrier to entry for me is the noise factor, it's a bit much. Further, I understand the added value of threading online conversations, but the physical aggregate thread, as it appears on building 43, isn't that compelling. What filtering mechanisms are in place? Imagine a publication with 1K plus mentions, conversations, and comments. Will users sift through that data?
  • that's awesome! i just came to the comments and it shut off the video in the middle of it. why can't the video come with me to the comments!!!??
  • Good post ive actually been thinking about adding disqus to my own blog.

Echo is a con. Just look at Get Satisfaction and check the numbers of unanswered questions and problems.

As a customer who PAID FOR ECHO LIVE and have sent endless emails to payment, support, get satisfaction and everywhere else and NOT ONE member of the staff has ever contacted me.
I've started a dispute resolution through PAYPAL to get my money back.

Copied and pasted part of my last email to all departments of Echo:

RE: CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION TO ECHO LIVE PACK. Subscription Number: S-71R87696WL452434Y

Since this service has not been added to my account and no one reply to my emails, neither from payment, support or from staff at get satisfaction I request a refund back of the $24.00 I paid via PayPal and, also, delete my subscription to ECHO LIVE PACK.

THEY OFFER NO SUPPORT AT ALL. TRY AND PRESS ANY OF THE "CONTACT US" LINKS AND IT WILL TAKE YOU TO A FORUM, BLOG, ETC...

    I HATE ECHO....and JS kit
