It’s not every day you get access to a plant in China that makes something inside your computer or game console or car. A few weeks back we visited Seagate’s Wuxi plant which makes more than a million hard drives every week. Employs more than 10,000 people.
Seagate has been my partner for several years now and sponsors my show, which is why I was the first American blogger to get access to this plant. Obviously I appreciate everything Seagate does for me and social media (they are playing around with FriendFeed and Facebook, their FriendFeed room is here).
This is also my 100th video. Thanks to Rocky Barbanica for his role in producing and editing these videos. Greatly appreciate that too.
Seagate is a dream client. They rarely ask me to do anything. They’ve never forced me to put interruptive advertising up or asked for anything that was anti community or viewer. That’s HUGE in this world and I hope that they continue to drive down the price of storage the way they have for about 30 years.
Thanks and hope you enjoy getting this look inside the factory in Wuxi, China.
That’s awesome. I’ve always thought Seagate was a great company. Good work!

Every time I hear how nice Seagate is to Robert, I go out and buy another hard drive. Seriously, I just picked up a little 500G SATA to do yearly backup which I will store in the safe deposit box.

That’s kinda’ awesome.
You really need to come up with an opening line for your interviews though…lol

Great opportunity to visit a plant like that. I always wanted to visit Seagate manufacturing plant. Anyway, i will be working soon.

Seagates are great hard drives. The only HDs worth buying are manufactured by Western Digital or Seagate.

Seagate’s rep has always been pretty good as a solid company with at least a little conscience. The video is pretty interesting too.

Thanks Jonathan! Using sennheiser wireless mics too. Keep watching the shows!

I am in the market for another hard drive and because of their good advertising program for sites like you, and the notcot.org network, I am definitely going to get a seagate HD next.

Rocky…you’re doing a great job. I do documentary work and you get great results with a very short time to prepare (lighting, acoustics, etc.). What mics r you using? I’m pleased with the sennheiser wireless mikes, especially when there’s poor room acoustics. Makes a huge difference. I am curious 2 see how Mercury changes. I get the impression some European newspapers are further with video reportages, though a lot are still making “broomcupboard” TV.

Would be even more interesting to see the logistic route of the deliver system by suppliers…even we all know there is a lot secret in the way products are made, but i just have to make imagination about a track lots of clean part, coming in and out of factories overnight and day. Very hollywood and kinda like the Hive, all underground and stuff…LOL

What I would like to know, since we are talking about Hard-drives, is whether Seagate is offering Hard-drive recycling program yet.
This is something that seems obvious to me, there are definitely parts and/or raw materials that can be easily reused, and in this day and age of environmental awareness it’s more important than ever!

Technolgy along with two directional communication via blogs such as these will definitenely change the world and I believe it will be in a positive direction.

With the American economy being as it is - you do not know whether this video will make you happy or sad now.
Perhaps by getting the labor done in China, the overall costs of those hard drives go down for everyone.
But could U.S. High tech technology advance to the point of making the next generation of storage producible in the U.S. yet still deliver the same ROI as Hard Drives become obsolete
