Skiing Longhorn…

I’m so jealous of Loic Le Meur. He is skiing at Whistler so I told him “you should drop by the Longhorn saloon.” That’s the bar that gave Windows Vista its code name. He got video just to taunt me. :-)

Windows Vista isn’t Longhorn. Longhorn cratered, and Vista is the minor update that Microsoft did after the rollback to the Windows 2003 Server code base.

Longhorn was the biggest software project failure in the private sector of all time, blowing away the previous record holder, IBM’s “Office Vision” project, which wasted some $800M.

I live in a suburb of Vancouver so I’ve been up there pretty frequently. The Longhorn really isn’t that great… aside from the novelty of being a windows codename.

    Cheers!

    biggest software project failure

Well, it had Scoble as an Evangelist, that outcome was predictable 10 miles away.

I use to be a manager for the hotel above ‘longhorns’. so here are my 2 cents on this one.

Longhorns is really popular especially for apres and on aussie day. How popular? The waitresses take home $1000 a day in peak season.

The microsoft guys spend lots of time in whistler with 2 annual retreats + lots of independent vacation time. I chalked that up to company culture as i never met an amazon.com employee in my 3 years there. Among others, Gates has a house up there. In the past, several other projects were also code named ‘whistler.’

maybe its a coincidence but a northern neighborhood of whistler is called ‘Alta-Vista’. I asked some windows engineers right at an unofficial whistler after launch party for vista and they had no idea if the two were related.
