Vendors going to CES? You’ve been warned

A group of people are going to have little devices that will turn off your TVs. Make sure you cover up your IR ports or you’ll be doing a lot of restarting of TVs.

You’ve been warned. I am not one of them, but I know several people who will be doing this as a prank.

Haha, this reminds me of my freshman year in high school. Me and one of my friends both had Pocket PC’s, and had a software that had all the program codes for different TV models. Long story short, we could use the IR port on the Pocket PC’s to use them as a remote for pretty much any TV. It was always fun in class when watching a boring video to turn the TV off from the back of the class, or to randomly mute it and see how long it took our clueless teacher to figure out what happened. IR pranks are always fun xD

You warned of this last year too, did anyone actually report of this happening?

As a marketing guy you probably know that vendors pull fast ones on their customers all the time. Microsoft, for example, always lies about the performance and ability of its products, and exaggerates the ease of use of its products.

Scoble, is there a reason you seem to favor vendors over individuals, even those making pranks?

normob: don’t worry, only a small percentage of the industry reads my blog. Jeremiah: I didn’t hear any reports from last year of this happening. It sure would be fun to go around with a video camera and watch the mayhem.

anon: huh? And who do you think will have to turn back on all those TV’s? Individuals, right? Why are you advocating messing with THEIR lives?

I would hope that adults would be more mature than this. My hope is obviously misplaced.

If you don’t think vendors play pranks on each other you must not have been locked up in some stale air, bad lighting, three day convention vendor hell. Its not just the visitors.

Funny how I can love MAKE yet still think this prank is asinine. It only takes a tiny smidgen of common sense to understand the MILLIONS of dollars consumer electronics vendors spend on CES.

But hey, why not try to screw it up for them, cuz that’s like, you know, like, COOL.
