Containers defined

So Google is using a lot of new terms with its OpenSocial platform. So, what is a “container?”

A “container” is something that hosts apps built for this new platform. So, MySpace is a container. Bebo is a container. Eventually even my blog could be a container.

  • Uh, ok, but then what is the new meaning of "platform" in your treatment?
  • Christopher Coulter
    Tupperware is a container.

Hey Rob, I guess it will be a matter of time and some help from your coding friends to have your +5k friends in your own blog huh?

    Dawn,

    That's a great question!

I, too, would like to hear the answer to that one. I suspect the answer will be "yes".

    Google does no evil?
  • Robert, what does this mean in terms of who "controls" (i.e. can see and utilize and exploit) the social fabric itself.

IOW, if I have a container on OpenSocial, will Google mine it for information? Can anybody mine other containers for social fabric connections?

This is surely a move to extend their advertising reach and effectiveness. I'd like to know more about the mechanics behind that.
  • Northern: Absolutely Not.
