Geek events coming

by on July 4, 2006

Are you in Chicago on Thursday evening? They are having a TechCocktail.

On August 6th we’ll be meeting in Emigrant, Montana, for the “Off-the-Grid” campout.

Anything else geeky coming soon? BlogHer, but that’s sold out. Friends Of O’Reilly, but that’s by invitation only (I’m not). The Apple developer event is coming in August, but Patrick and I will be in Montana (no Apple stores, so the credit cards are safe, heheh).

Know of something else? Post it here. We need a geek event wiki. Google isn’t bringing anything up for me.

  • I'll be in Boston next week for the Microsoft World Wide Partner conference.

Would love to have a bloggers/Geek dinner, Boston is a fun town!
  • Heading to Redmond end of month for TechReady. Definately hope to some some geek cocktail time. Would love to see something though here in NC that pulls in geeks from lots of companies. Hmmmm I am actually meeting tomorrow with some folks around possible Information Worker community events.... let's see several hundred IW community members from a multitude of different companies plus downtown Charlotte and beer and wine.... May be a techie cocktail event in the works. Thanks for the indspiration :-)
  • Seattle has two weblog meetups that happen monthly, East Side is usually the first Tuesday (delayed a week due to Fourth of July this time) and Seattle proper is the third Wednesday. Topics aren't strictly geeky, but if those present wish to geek out, it's allowed! U'm the organizer so there is usually info on my site, or on meetup.com

  • Robert, on your way through Montana in August, consider lunch in Missoula with the newwest.net and/or grupthink.com teams?
  • John, let me see if I can do that!
  • I maintain a public calendar on google calendar called "Events for Geeks" (see

    http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=480fie...)

I'm happy to add others as editors - the idea is to create a shared resource for Geeks (and event organizers) everywhere.

    My basic criteria:

    - the event should be publicly known (i.e. private, invite only/off-the-record events won't be listed)

    - whenever possible a URL should be include for all events listed

    - most events should be listed as fullday events with details explaining what and where. Otherwise watch the timezones and try to get it right

    - not all events listed are intended as events people might attend - many are listed as "events organizers should be aware of" (such as finals weeks for Stanford and UC Berkeley).

    - non-tech but of geek interest events are more than welcome (Burning Man, GenCon, SXSW, etc)

  • I'm always looking for geek and tech events that fit in with our travels too. I've been trying to use Upcoming.org for this - the tech section - but I find it's way too unwieldy and slow for it to work well.

Shannon - your calendar looks very useful. do you think putting the location in the title field for the event would be helpful? If you didn't already know Gnomedex was on, Gnomedex Seattle would tell you whether it was worth clicking through for details more than just 'Gnomedex'.
  • Thanks for the mention of TECH cocktail! We are excited about the response. It should be fun. ;)
  • PodCamp Boston - SEPT 9th-10th

    http://podcamp.org

PodCamp is a FREE BarCamp-style meetup for podcasters and listeners, bloggers and readers, and new media types of all stripes. Our first PodCamp is PODCAMP BOSTON: SEPT 9th-10th, 2006 in the BOSTON AREA.
  • Hey Robert, just have to point out that Day ONE of BlogHer is sold out, but Day TWO still has about 50 open seats. The schedule for Day Two is here:
    http://workerbees.typepad.com/BlogHer06DayTwo_W...

(This is the second time you've mentioned it being "sold out", so I figured I should step in an clarify :)

I also found at least one site that was tracking "Web 2.0"-related conferences, but there are a lot of things it doesn't capture:
    http://www.branddialogue.com/2006/05/15/web-20-...

Here's the list of what's left off the list:
"WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED: Tech-specific conferences unless they’re directly related to Web 2.0/Marketing 2.0-related (e.g., OPML Camp is included). Conferences on mobile technologies. Usability conferences. Web marketing conferences that aren’t heavily into new media/new tech (i.e., search engine optimization)."
  • I am co-hosting BarCampRochester.
    https://barcamp.org/BarCampRochester

We are holding it at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. We have a strong geek community. It should be a good time.

Echoing the person who has set something up on Google, why not add events to Eventful? You can add tags to your events, so everything of interest to Geeks could have the "Geek" tag - although of course overuse of a tag renders it useless as a filter. Eventful has a nice interaction with desktop tools that support the iCalendar standard, allowing you to click on a button and open it in a calendar program which is associated with that MIME / file type; that's about as simple as it gets right now in the calendar world (can't speak about Google Calendar as I haven't used it enough yet).
  • If you're in the Chicago area, I keep an event calendar blog with geek / software / entrepreneurial events. TechSocial.com
  • Tibet Sprague
Don't forget little Providence, RI. The providence geeks throw monthly dinners / cocktails, and also host other events of interest to Rhode Island techies and business folks. There is in fact a dinner tonight which will include a demo by local startup Amie St..
