World Cup Fans, get ready!
I told my dad he should get a new HDTV so he can watch the World Cup in style (yes, America does have a few soccer fans). Anyway, Silicon Valley VC Jeff Clavier links to a schedule for the World Cup. Hey, Jeff, wanna come over and watch on my new super dooper 60 inch screen? :-)

Is it going to be broadcast in HD though? We’ve found, down here in Australia, that most sporting events aren’t even wide screen as yet. All countries broadcast to the lowest common denominator, because many of the major buying countries haven’t started their digital television role out yet.
Fingers crossed though. Australia is in, and the excitement is already reaching fever-pitch.

Richard: I’m not sure. I sure hope so, though! Heck, if the SuperBowl can be done in HD, why can’t the World Cup?

Sure, there will be 4 quarter-finals during Gnomedex. Do you think Chris will mind if we skip the conference for a few hours :-) ?

If you’re hosting an England game, count me in. ;-)

The HD schedule is here: http://www.hdsportsguide.com/worldcup.php
We will definitely be hosting some parties!
I don’t think Chris will mind. After all, it’s an unconference! :-)

It’s great to see you people in the USA taking more interest in the UK’s national sport. :)
The problem is I think lots of UK businesses are going to see a lull in activity while the World Cup is running, but maybe that means we can take breaks to watch it ourselves. :)

@6. It’s not just the UK’s national sport, is it? I mean, heck, Arsenal lost the EU cup. The UK only won the World Cup once, back in ‘66. And didn’t they even fail to qualify in ‘74, ‘78, ‘94? Seems like Brazil (5 titles), Germany (3 titles) and Italy (3 titles) would have just as much a claim (if not more) than the UK (one title). For a nation that invented the sport…..that has to hurt as much as the USA losing the World Baseball tournament and the US losing the World Basketball championships. ;-)
That said, it will be decades before the US every plays for, let alone wins the World Cup. Not enough money to motivate kids to devote themselves to “football” when compared to other professional sports in the US.

Too bad ESPN2HD is not available on Comcast in Redmond (they have ESPNHD, but not ESPN2HD,) which means all of eight games will be available here in HD. Quitwe frankly, I’ve found Comcast’s HD offerings to be pretty pathetic. I’d dump them, but I can’t get satellite reception in my apartment, which leaves me no other alternative.

dmad There’a a comic in the UK that get round this argument by saying that as we invented the game every victory is ours no matter what the nationallity. Every time Brazil win England win. I’m with him! The US team is in the world cup and could make it to the second round, not a bad effort for a nation that has at least three other sports above soccer in popularity terms. I

It is interesting that over here in the UK our Sky Satellite provider was starting to advertise HD (its only just taking off), at the same time the BBC were saying they were going to record the World Cup in HD, but at the time had not sorted out a deal with Sky and had no way to broadcast it as terestial digital TV cant cope yet.
I had thought they were doing it for export, or for some great after its all happened HD DVD.
Now though they have announced they are on Sky, so you cant get a HD installation for love nor money.
Lots the cars over here in the UK are adorned with the st george flag. SO I adorned my epredator potato in Second Life with the same :-) They are available for sale for a whole l$5 on my scruffy public plot http://slurl.com/secondlife/Myeolchi/176/24 :-)
