Phone call about new Xbox 360 blogging features
While I was at dinner tonight with the LiveSide guys Jason Bogovich called, his voice full of excitement. First he apologized for calling, then asked me "Did you know your Xbox can blog?"
No, I didn't.
"I'll send you email."
I love getting calls like this from people who discovered something cool. Actually, he sent me to Major Nelson's blog and the Major blogged about XboxVoice.com.
Thanks, Jason, for calling!

Gah, I really need to pay more attention to things like this and their apparent value as informative things. I integrated this service into one of my employee’s blogs a couple of weeks ago using RSS and XSLT so his ‘Xbox 360’s blog’ appears as a category in his normal blog, automatically updated, but didn’t really think any more of it.

[...] Sometimes things come along and surprise you. A couple of weeks ago I integrated 360 Voice into Luke’s blog. And then promptly forgot about it. However it seems the service is catching people’s attention … [...]

The link to Major Nelson’s blog is wrong — it goes to Dave Winer’s blog. The link should be http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/04/29/Now-your-Xbox-360-can-blog.aspx.

In an attempt to redeem myself for not really paying attention, here’s a HOWTO on how to get your 360’s blog onto your own WordPress site:

It was developed by an Xbox MVP and his buddy.

I just looked at Major nelson’s 360 blog and my god is that thing a waste of space and bandwidth (possibly a bigger waste than MSN spaces).
It basically just says what he played that day. How exciting. So insightful. I can’t wait to subscribe to that RSS feed…

So, this looks like a blog version of a Jenny Cam for Xbox’s. Another sign the apocolypse is upon us

Lol, John, that’s funny. Spaces is actually a great service IMHO, and it was available all day long today, I don’t ever remember an outage. Albeit a bit slow, it’s great for someone who doesn’t like me, who doesn’t want the hassle of dealing with internic and passwords and security updates and hosting charges and so forth. Plus, I understand that Microsoft will mesh many Live services there, sooner or later.
So I was up late last night, after watching the Cavs. I was finishing up some patent work I needed to get done for work and I always check the Scoble blog and the Major Nelson blog right before I go to bed. (when I get a chance) I checked my Major Nelson feed and I see, “You can now blog with your 360!” which is a bit misleading, but technically accurate. It is a web log.
At this point it’s like 2 am almost and my brain is dead. So I am like, “I have been looking for a reason to call Scoble.” I think it’s cool this guy has his phone number on the site, I’m paranoid of even listing my real name on the internet. Who knows what people will think of me if they get too Googling my name around town. If the 360 being able to Blog and Scoble not having a comment on it didn’t qualify as a reason to call him, I didn’t think there would ever be a reason. So I called him.
I felt a bit of a letdown when I found out it’s just a log file parsing bot or whatever. The name made me think it would send voice to text, or do an podcasting type thing. While still cool, I’d like to see some real API stuf come from the Live team where you could do cool stuff that was of course done with totally managed code…
I’ll still keep my site up, and maybe it will be interesting to read what I was playing a year or two years before.
I can see myself going, Hey “insert friend” remember back in May, when I totally fragged you non stop all day.
First time talking to you Robert! Nice to meet you! Oh, and the reason i said sorry was I was debating not calling you as it was almost 11 your time, and I thought with a wife and kid it might be bad timing. Then i thought maybe I should send a text message but then if it’s not free your wife might get pissed at me! (just kidding) I actually thought you were in a bar or out eating with all of the noise going on in the backround.
I am happy for you that you got the HDTV and the 360 and you probably have a nicer phone than my SX66 which I upgraded to 2k5 mobile. My phone is SO 2005.
We’ll talk to you later!

Bah, sorry about the double post.

These are worthless automated messages - there are only about 10 in tota (they get reused) - written in a boring, commercialist tone which is just about as exciting as trawling through C# Express source code. Scratch that - the source code is much more exciting. Possibly the most worthless ‘feature’ of the X360.
