train based blogging

by on April 18, 2006

I'm on a train, with my T60 (two thumbs up), next to a friend (chris butler from the toolbar team who used to write for orange magazine) using a cell modem (verizon - only okay data rates, heard cingular is better) to post this.  i love technology.

I also love living and working the bay area.  Next to me on the train were some people talking about a new google maps idea.  On the platform while we were waiting for the train, I saw yahoo, google, and microsoft badges (more, but those were the ones I recognized).  Think I'm gonna write more about this and what's like to work on SVC campus of MSFT tonight.

Today is a big historical day for the bay area - the 100th anniversy of the 1906 SF earthquake/fire.  The San Francisco MOMA has an indepth photo collection of before and after the earthquake on display.  I checked it out a few weeks back and it was pretty amazing.  They have a really cool handout that has pictures, info and stories for the day that is 100% free to take home.

  • I'm not sure whether you've heard about Bangalore (India). Since across the globe from USA and it very similar there. I've witnessed a pub fight over "C# is a clone of Java" and house-for-rent board that read "Make this your 127.0.0.1"

Check out my post on this http://blogs.msdn.com/abhinaba/archive/2005/10/...
  • I'm glad you like you're T60 too! I guess I can be part of the cool club now.
  • Well it also depends on where you are and Verizon's coverage. I'm not sure theirs is as good as Sprint's these days.
  • B - I just checked and it appears to be EVDO, but my connection speeds are just not up to snuff. Maybe I have a config problem...I'll check into this.

K - i was wondering why the upper card slot had an extruded area that blocked my pc card. I hadn't gotten around to figuring it out and am glad I read your write up!
  • EVDO rocks. I've been using it since last July. If you like the T60 (I just concluded my eval), check out one of the features most people aren't aware of at http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/200...

The fingerprint reader is fun, too. :)
  • Regarding data rates - are you using a 1X card or EVDO?

If EVDO, Cingular certainly wouldn't be faster. Verizon and Sprint are the only true high-speed options in the US right now, unless you count Cingular's HSDPA which has virtually nil coverage and offers "near EVDO" speeds.
