Microsoft’s Open Source Software Software Lab opens Port 25

"Aren't you a little tall for a Storm Trooper?"

Any blog that opens with that line has gotta be interesting.

http://port25.technet.com/ is where it's at.

  1. Good idea… but why is the text designed to be hard to read by anyone over 50? And why doesn’t the text size vary in IE6, even if you select View|Text Size|Largest?

Does Microsoft no longer care about coping with the less standard “features” of IE, or is it simply a ploy to get Port25 visitors to use a different browser, and maybe a different OS, instead of XP SP2/IE6?

    Foot. Shoot. Bang.

  2. I think it is a great initiative. Me subsribed to the site.

  3. Hey Jack, if you use either Firefox or I.E. then try CNTRL-Mousewheel for fine-grained manipulatation of text sizes. It works for me on Port 25. As for Port 25 itself, time will tell.

  4. Let me second the comment on text size. Make it easy to read if you want people to actually be able to read it. Scoble’s blog which isn’t even an official blog is one of the few that is actually readable (from a default text size stanpoint) from the ’softy camp. Most of MSN Spaces default text is too small too.

On10.net font size is tiny too. Somebody call the font police on campus.

Will they extradite the past offenders to Linotype? ;) They had to near copycat the UI font in Windows Vista. I mean, amazing.

  6. I thought Leia said “aren’t you a little *short* for a StormTrooper?”

    Comment by Maurits — April 6, 2006 @ 4:36 pm

  7. Indeed, it was short. Leia saying that to Luke…

No INT. or EXT. as is common now…from the Revised Fourth Draft, January 15, 1976

    ——-

INTERIOR: DEATH STAR — CELL ROW.

Luke stops in front of one of the cells and blasts the door away with a laser pistol. When the smoke clears, Luke sees the dazzling young princess-senator. She had been sleeping and is now looking at him with an uncomprehending look on her face. Luke is stunned by her incredible beauty and stands staring at her with his mouth hanging open.

LEIA: (finally) Aren’t you a little short to be a stormtrooper?

Luke takes off his helmet, coming out of it.

LUKE: What? Oh…the uniform. I’m Luke Skywalker. I’m here to rescue you.

    LEIA: You’re who?

  8. They planning on redoing the videos so they play right?

Flip4Mac doesn’t give any sound. If only there was a way to put up streaming video that would work everywhere…

  9. Thanks for the tip, Andy, but the scroll-wheel trick doesn’t work here with IE6 and port25.

A tip in return: you can often make even bad sites readable by looking at them via http://www.loband.org/

This also cuts out a lot of malicious crap and often *improves* the site design ;-)

  10. […] Now here’s something you don’t see everyday. Scoble reports that Microsoft has opened Port 25… apparently an open source software lab. Marketing shenanigans or the real deal? You decide! … […]

There is. Don’t use Microsoft’s proprietary junk (which exists only to inconvenience paying customers with DRM crap).

    Google figured out how.
