Cool Tablet PC school

On10.net there's a cool school that uses Tablet PCs and requires all the fifth graders to have one. Obviously a private school (and expensive) but cool nontheless.

Alfred Thompson, who works with schools as part of his job at Microsoft, blogs more about it.

John Phillips, director of education at the school, has a blog and talks about the project too.

By the way, we're looking for other educators who are using technology in interesting ways in their schools. Do you know someone?

    At my school (I am Net Admin) we have been a laptop school for 7 years. All students 7-12 have laptops. We began transitioning to tablets 2 years ago and now have about 450 on campus. We also use a cart full of tablets in 2-5 too. The tablet enables students and teachers to work in the way they are most comfortable.

    Chester Bateman leads the Grassroots Learning Project at Oregon State University. They’re doing some cool stuff with podcasting. The idea of the project is to bridge the community and the university. More here: http://oregonstate.edu/education/podcasts/

    We’ll be hosting Podcast on the Floor, a mini-conference next month at an IT trade show called Innotech. It’s an off shoot of Podcast Hotel. We’re also looking for educators to participate who are doing interesting things with podcasting!

    I can heartily recommend the Toshiba M200 and I am greatly looking forward to the M400. The M200 has been the most reliable, from a physical standpoint, laptop we have had at the school. It has survived the aduse of teenage girls quite well.

    I’m in an IT intensive class at Bentley College in Boston, and 1/2 the freshman class has tablets, 1/2 has PCs. We’re looking to do a full scale rollout of tablets but we’re having problems with the Toshiba Tecra M4, and are looking for another one. Also, we’re doing a lot of cool stuff with video and audio podcasting - check us out http://www.bentley.edu and check out some of our podcasts

    We are a private Christian school. Anything we get is either via private purchase, or donation. The last of the donated computers are dying a slow death.

    I am trying to do a complete overhaul of the computer system… but 40+ computers and some networking gear is out of the budget… so I am going to try the donation route.

    If anyone wants to help out, I’d be happy to provide more details. I want to use Windows XP Pro, and I’d like the computers to be fairly recent technology… but cutting edge isn’t required.

For the past two years I’ve been using Tablet PC’s, replacing my paper music library with digital sheet music and using it in combination with a wireless programmable footswitch to turn pages during rehearsals, lessons and performances. I just conducted a class recently in conjuction with technologist Barry Brahier and Concert Saxophonist Brian Sacawa discussing ways in which today’s music students can better integrate technology into their art and pedagogy. One of my dreams is to get classical musicians to treat tools like tablet pc’s as truly “artistic instruments” and to catch up with the 21st century, particularly with regard to pedagogy. I’ve gotten a lot of our students very excited about the possibilities - here’s hoping they’ll develop the technological acumen and imagination to carry classical music through the 21st century and beyond!

    Every student studying in Crescent Girls School in Singapore are equipped with their own Tablet PC. The latest cohort of Secondary One students (Grade 7 in the US) have purchased their own Fujitsu T4210 Tablet PC. In class, the teachers use their own tablets to teach and the results have been very good so far.

    I’m proud to say that my entire school cohort from sec 1 to 4 have a tablet pc each. Its from Fujitsu and the entire school is wireless. Alos, CGS has been selected as one of the few FutureSchools @ Singapore. CGS has alos been selected by Microsoft to be a mentor school.

    School is so fun and engaging with tablet pcs and students are so high-tech. I,m really proud to be a crescentian!

Tablet pc’s are a great help to me as i dont have to hurriedly scrawl all the thigs the teacher puts up on the board now. Instead the teachers start a live sharing session in OneNote and i just copy it in there, i dont even have to print my assignments out anymore, just email it to the apporiate teacher and your’e done, sooooooo easy. Our grade 11 and 12 use Acer travelmate’s (which suck and weigh a tonne) while the freshman grade 10′s get awesome lenovo’s x61T’s with all the options, it’s awesome
