Things I don’t do

Does anyone know when or who started the "don't do" movement?

I found your blog whilst doing a search for nude girl photos, It looks like I have had a successful search ;)

I do:
* Browse through a lot of syndicated feeds every day (including the main feed @ blogs.msdn.com)
* with Outlook + Newsgator
* Use MSN Messenger extensively
* Use IRC (#scene.no, #mono, #monodev etc)
* Use Flickr (larswilhelmsen)
* Use del.icio.us (larsw)
* Use WordPress @ http://www.sral.org/
* Use gmail from time to time - even if I've got a lot of other email accounts.

I wonder why I have:
* A LinkedIn account - I will never use it as a communication bearer anyways.
* Plaxo - it only clutters my Outlook and ruins the startup time.
* A Orkut account - Orkut was hijacked by Brazilians a long time ago - and my guestbook is filled with gibberish.

I don't:
* Use a web cam
* do Cybrsex
* Chain-letters by mail
* Forward "funny" attachments

Think you're missing the boat on Plaxo, Scoble. I've got 1700 contacts in Outlook, adding new ones all the time. (I'm the CFO of a startup company.) It makes my life *a lot* easier, not harder.

Maybe you are too popular for services like LinkedIn and Plaxo, but you shouldn't put them down unless you've tried them....

I won't:

1. Read partial RSS feeds
2. Join sites like Plaxo, LinkedIn, Friendster, Orkut or the like
3. Register for any website I can use BugMeNot with
4. Go through my spam box to see if I missed anything

I won't comment on any of Scoble's post.

I won't buy a tag on 1000tags.com I don't care how web 2.0'ish they are, and never ever post anything related to sites like that anywhere. Wait a moment, didn't I just do that?

What about Skype?

Scoble, you can set up your Flickrmail to automatically forward to your email. This is what I do. Sometimes the mail comes in with their actual email address and you can just email them back from your reader and sometimes (if the person hasn't set this up) you only get their flickrmail and have to go back to Flickr to reply if you want. Still you certainly can set up your flickr to at least *read* all of your flickrmail

And if you want you can also set it up to get any other notifications you might want (when people comment on one of your photos for instance).

Not much work and one more way for people to reach you and find you.

Also I see that you rarely put photos on your blog site. When you post a flickr photo to your site it doesn't really effect your bandwidth because flickr hosts the image. It's also super easy, you can just hit blog this on the flickr button and instantly the photo is posted to your blog and you can write your article from there.

It may be that you intentionally don't want photos to clutter up your site but I know that having a good photo to go with a geek dinner that you throw or something like that can add to the quality of the article (in my opinion).

I will not fill out silly blog memes.

I hate the damn things. They seem to me to be content generation cheats for people who can't think of something to blog about.

I rarely put up away messages any more for my instant messenger program.

A side-note... I *do* do LinkedIn, but that's because it's a very useful side-channel to companies and people you are professionally related to. It'll probably play a role in my next job-search.

That said, it's useless for someone like Scoble who has too many connections that it overwhelms with too much noise.

I won't listen to 'podcasts' on my own (or talk radio, for that matter). Life is too short to deal with amateur spoken content that is not searchable, indexable, skimmable, or summarizable.

Contrariwise, I won't podcast. I'm not so arrogant to think that people are so desperate for content that they'd want to hear my rambling. If I were to teach (the one potential use of podcasting-style tech), it wouldn't likely be via speech either, because it's nearly impossible to 'write code' verbally, and have it be any use to a student.

Okay 10th point.

I won't acquiesce (any longer) to the notion that 'Knowedge Is Power'. Look how much is out there.

Concise, to the point.

1) I won't use another aggregator unitl IE7.
2) I won't use Outlook tasks. I flag e-mails and try to keep the inbox as short as possible.
3) I won't start my own blog. Not enough to give and not enough time.
4) I won't keep up with 18 (or how many) ad supported sites for my stuff.
5) I won't test with out NUnit again. (Shame on me.)
6) I won't buy another desktop. Using an Inspiron 9300.
7) I won't build another computer. (I hope not, atleast).
8) I won't drink the kool aid, again. Longhorn = Cario 2.0. (Man, it hurts to say that. I want to believe. Maybe 3.0 will get it right.)
9) I won't belive this ridiculus *#$%@#@ notion that an HTML app can do everything a desktop can do. BS.
10) I won't have a 10th point. :)

Plaxo is a life saver if you have a smartphone. As you are a geek by changing computers, smartphones frequently (more than the normal fellow anyway). The easiest way to have your contacts/appointments always up to date is using Plaxo. Has saved me more than once.

and MS IT sort of made the Plaxo decision for him.

1. Won't stop refreshing C9
2. Won't switch to OSX
3. Won't stop being a super windows fanboy when linux/mac zealots are around

I don't do RSS feeds with ads in them.

I don't ask other people to link to me.

Funny. You didn't say you don't do windows...

There are many reasons I don't do Plaxo, and I choose not to do most of the others - including Coulter's additions; I make an exception for LinkedIn, as it's surprising how many connections you can find - and as an erstwhile hiring manager, I've been able to get "back-channel" references a couple of times. I'm also back in touch with a couple folks I worked with but fell out of contact as a result.

With the routine disclaimer that I don't work for or with LinkedIn, I find it surprisingly "professional" in comparison to a number of similar services out there (Orkut jumps immediately to mind as something I tried briefly and won't go back to).

Just my two-penn'orth and all that.

Can't you do Plaxo from Outlook? (Corporate network blocking it aside, I mean... it does not really force you to go away from your email tool, after the initial install and setup, correct?)

I don't do Plaxo for 2 reasons:

1. No Mac client ...

2. IMHO: The company looks like it got funded based on a ex-Napster exec being on board, maybe that's petty ... but so be it.

I won't do PAY WiFi, unless they have a roaming agreement with my T-Mobile/Starbucks account. I mean EVERY mobile phone company figured out ROAMING. If I'm stuck at a airport I'll use my Nokia Phone BT'ed to the Powerbook to go online.

I dont do unecessary "Reply All"'s and I wish more people would stop doing them too.

If someone emails me and I respond, and then I get a message from them saying I'm not on the their whitelist and I need to jump through some hoops, I won't respond. If they email me asking about something, I consider their responsibility to put me on their whitelist at the same time.

I talked about that just yesterday in fact, here.

I like the rest of your list too. Plaxo, etc - all just more add-ins to manage when I set up a new system, or hack through when I upgrade to a new OS (especially a beta one). So I'll only use something along that line if it offers a huge benefit with minimal training or tinking around, and very few of them do.

Hmmm, that's an odd one, not entertaining customers or associates after hours. I spent several hours last night entertaining customers (ISVs in Toronto), and learned a ton of technical details about various software development tools. I think that one's worth doing for purely Machiavellian reasons even if you don't care for eating, drinking, or laughing.

I never respond to anyone who forwards me a joke or a nude picture, unless it's of somebody I actually know.

Well, have to run, some customers are waiting in the bar. :-)

I don't subscribe to a podcast or an RSS feed without listening or reading for a few days first.

I don't let six months go by without wiping a hard drive and reinstalling Tablet PC & essential apps.

I don't do windows (the see-through kind).

I won't pay for software when there's an equal or greater product available for free. I won't go to the movies when I'll be able to rent it at Hastings for $0.49 in six months.

I won't lie about my opinions. If you ask me "do these pants make me look fat?", be prepared to hear "no, the fat makes you look fat".

Yep, do anything to increase the net value of microsoft. I will not develop for their platform, pay money for licenses for their software (or use it to create content - I'm no pirate - but I have copies around to read proprietary file formats - I'm not patsy either), or otherwise promote their products to others.

I won't register for a news site nor will I (usually) even bother to use bugmenot any more because it's too much information both unnecessary to gather and repetitive.
