Rick says MSFTies aren’t eating enough dogfood

Rick Segal, venture capitalist, complains about MSDN subscriptions and says that Microsoft isn’t eating enough dog food. OK, that’s definitely something I’m going to work on in 2006. It’s why I’m playing a lot more with our latest stuff this holiday.

Oh, and Rick, please don’t hire away Jerry Ding. We need all the customer-focused people we can get!

  3. This is absurd! MSFT people have nothing *but* dogfood. It’s not like they get to to write their apps in LISP or Smalltalk.

  4. I read your blog all the time and you seem like a smart techie type guy. Do you have any idea how to get rid of the systemwarning.com spyware? It’s my home page now and I have tried several things to get rid of it. Any advice would be much appreciated. Or if anyone else who reads this can help me that would be great. We updated to Norton IS 2006, downloaded spybot and adaware and none of those worked. Thanks

  5. We dont eat the dog-food until it is baked, and then you either ship it or stuff it. Most often you ship-it and it tastes like crap

  6. Hey, you can’t dogfood all the time. You’ve got to spend your time dogfooding the competition as well! http://mediacenter.mattgoyer.com/archives/2005/12/24/1038

  7. Vista 5270

Just before taking off for the holidays last week, I worked up the gall to repave my main machine and install Vista 5270, the December Community Technology Preview release. If there’s ever a good time to lose a couple of days rebuilding systems, …

  8. Most of the MSFT employees that I know definitely do not “eat their own dog-food.” In fact, I have been repeatedly shocked at how many of the developers that I know prefer open alternatives such as Linux, OpenOffice, Eclipse, Bugzilla, etc. Or, if they do pay for software, they typically are Apple enthusiasts to some degree. If I were Bill Gates, I would make it an ‘A item’ to schedule some serious internal team meetings and figure out what MSFT can do to get their technical employees to use their software. When the technorati at MSFT are bragging about their software on the web and using it actively without corporate “encouragement” I think that MSFT will have achieved a big win.

  9. I couldn’t agree more!!! At this time in the release of Windows XP and Office 2003 I and everyone I knew here had been running production boxes for day to day work for 2 months… to this point, I still don’t know anyone running completely on Vista and Office 12… for one… are we going to push the hardware budget to make this happen? Why isn’t my manager yelling at everyone on the team to upgrade as they did back in the day? I tell people to upgrade and they tell me it better not impact my project dates. I’m tired of my friends using MS products outside the company before me… I’m tired of status reports being more important than dog fooding! My mom shouldn’t be a beta tester before me… we need this release to be the cleanest product possible, and I just don’t see the push from within to make it so! Come on kids… LETS EAT!!!!!
